Coat Drive Aims to Clothe Cold Students

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Thousands of children in the Clark County School District are the innocent victims of the economy. More than 6,000 are either homeless or displaced. Some are living with other family members, friends, or in shelters.

Advocates say those students often fade unnoticed into the background. Of the 3,100 students at Rancho High School, 500 are in desperate financial need, and 120 are homeless but still attending school. Basic needs are often a struggle.

Every afternoon is busy for Rancho registrar Angela Urquiga who is also the school's homeless advocate. She offers hungry students chips and juice for lunch so they have something to eat.

Student Eligio Herrera watches the students file into Urquiaga's office as he works the main office desk. While sitting there, he's also noticed something else.

"I see a lot of people shivering in the hallways," Herrea said. "It makes me feel really bad."

Most of the displaced students don't have a warm coat. Eleventh grader Raji-Ne Jones is trying to get used to the colder morning temperatures. She says the kids are tough and proud, but can't hide the fact they're cold.

Urquiaga only has a few donated hoodies to hand out to the students. She has already given out 26 to help the teens keep warm.

"These are all donations. I can say, 'here child I have this sweater for you and I will try to get you more.'"

What she needs are coats, especially for students like Jones. This has not been an easy year for her. She's already moved residences a few times and -- sometimes -- has struggled to find enough food to get through the weekend. To Jones and other students like her, a donated coat would make all the difference.

"I'd appreciate that, if they could do that," Jones said.

If you would like to help, there is a coat drive taking place. Clark County School District has teamed up with Albertson's and the Salvation Army to get jackets to needy kids. Saturday is the last day for the coat drive. Just drop any new or gently used coat off at any Albertson's.
