New App Targets Cell Phone Robocallers

LAS VEGAS - A new application may finally help people eliminate robocalls, telemarketer calls and debt collector calls from their cell phones.

Privacy Star is a new smart phone app. that lets you block unwanted calls and immediately report violations to the federal government.

After you get a call or text from a number, the Privacy Star app. will block that number from your phone. The app. then allows you to immediately file a complaint about the number with the Federal Trade Commission.

The immediate complaint feature may be the best tool, because it will help federal authorities identify debt collectors, telemarketers and robocallers who are abusing the system.

Consumer advocates say this app. may do more for consumers than the Do Not Call list. Two hundred million people are registered on that list, but 150 million telemarketing calls are made every day.

Privacy Star is currently available for iPhones, Androids and Blackberries. The app. costs $0.99.
