LAS VEGAS - Hundreds of local businesses are being sent bills for services they didn't order.
Since the beginning of October, more than 140 businesses have complained to 8 on Your Side and the Better Business Bureau about a company called U.S. Public Yellow Pages.
Local business owners say they received a bill for $599 from the company, but they have no idea what it's for. When they called the number on the bill to get information, they uncovered something suspicious.
Andrea Vallee with Artsy Nannies in Town Square says the company provided her a cryptic recording of what sounds like one of her employees agreeing to the sale.
"They asked her several questions, and all she said was, ‘Yes,'" Vallee said. "There was no other conversation. When I asked them to play back the original, they were unable to provide that. They said they don't record that, and that they only recorded her saying yes she agrees to this package."
Andrea says her employee doesn't remember this call ever taking place. Growing more suspicious, Andrea looked up the company's website and found her business wasn't even included on the advertisements.
She asked U.S. Public Yellow Pages for a contract, but they couldn't provide one. They did provide a generic invoice, but it didn't list the store's correct address.
The Better Business Bureau has given the company an ‘F' rating for failing to respond to complaints.
As a result of this, business owners should check every bill that comes in this month very closely and follow up on anything that looks suspicious. You don't want to pay money you may not owe.
