Horsford, Tarkanian Debate at Las Vegas Synagogue

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Democrat Steven Horsford and Republican Danny Tarkanian took on foreign wars and Medicare in a weekend congressional debate at a Las Vegas synagogue.

Both of the candidates for the 4th district told the audience at the Temple Sinai Men's Club on Sunday that they would support Israel, but differed on other issues.

Tarkanian had strong words against the war in Afghanistan, saying American troops' work there is done and the wartime spending needed to be put back in the U.S.

Horsford said he supported withdrawing some troops, but qualified that by saying he wants a strong military and believes U.S. interests need to be protected.

Both candidates said they would defend Medicare, but Tarkanian promoted the idea of a voucher option while Horsford criticized the concept.
