CARSON CITY -- Nevada voters will decide next month whether to give state lawmakers authority to call themselves into special session.
Question 1, the only statewide measure on the November ballot, would amend the Nevada Constitution to allow legislators "on extraordinary occasions" to convene a special session if a petition is signed by two-thirds of the members in both legislative houses -- 14 state senators and 28 members of the Assembly.
Special sessions would be limited to 20 calendar days unless called to expel a legislator or impeach or remove the governor, other constitutional officers or a judicial officer from office. Sessions also could be extended if a supermajority of two-thirds of the members in both chambers approved.
Voters in 2006 rejected a similar measure by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin.
