I-TEAM: Owners, Employees of Suspected Clip Joint Indicted

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A grand jury has indicted the owners and employees of a suspected clip joint called Club Exclusive II.

The 8 News NOW I-Team was there two years ago when Metro Police SWAT teams raided the business along with two others. All of them are accused of scamming customers, using sex as a selling point.

These are places that allegedly suggest or promise sex, but instead take a customer's money and then show him the door.

Earlier this year, a British tourist was nearly stabbed to death when he argued for a refund. While police investigations typically put suspected clip joints out of business, they have not lead to criminal cases until now.

A grand jury indicted 13 people late last week, allegedly linked to Club Exclusive II. Police arrested several of them Tuesday night, including its owner James Buford.

According to court records, between January and June of that same year, Buford and his staff scammed six different men. In one case, police say a Texas tourist paid more than $7,000 for promises of a shower with five women. Instead, according to the indictment, he received no services and was pushed out the door by a bouncer.

"These businesses are just completely in business as a criminal enterprise to do nothing but fleece people out of money," Metro Police Sgt. Leonard Lorusso said.

The charges included in the indictment range from robbery to racketeering. District Attorney Steve Wolfson told the I-Team's Colleen McCarty that these are complicated, time-consuming cases.

He points out that the police contacted hundreds of potential victims most of them tourists during the course of the investigation. Not all of them were eager to cooperate.

The I-Team has followed several other clip joint investigations in recent years but Wolfson could not comment on whether those too may result in criminal charges.
