LAS VEGAS -- Construction for the Shops at Summerlin near the 215 Beltway and Charleston Boulevard will start next year. The retail project was mothballed for several years due to the poor economy.
Since 2008, the steel skeleton in Summerlin has been a reminder of an economy gone sour. However, by this time next year, it will become an active construction site. The Howard Hughes Corporation announced that Macy's department store as signed on as an anchor tenant. It will be one of three major tenants in the open-air mall.
"This is great news, wonderful news, it's going to be in the neighborhood," said Lydia Hauck, Summerlin resident.
The major retailer will join 130 other stores and restaurants, along with offices, hotels and some residential units in a 1.5 million square foot development. The developer said this announcement is a sign that the economy is recovering and retailers are confident people are willing to open up their wallets and spend again.
"For companies to invest this kind of money to create these kinds of jobs really means we are coming back," said Tom Warden, Howard Hughes Corporation.
The project is expected to provide about 1,700 jobs during the construction phase. When the Shops at Summerlin open, it will employ nearly 2,000 people.
There is no word yet on what other stores or restaurants will be part of the project. Construction for Macy's is set to begin in the fall 0f 2013 and be completed by the fall of 2014.
