LAS VEGAS – Family members are apologizing on behalf of a Las Vegas man accused of driving drunk when his car plowed into a crowded bus stop last week.

Gary Lee Hosey Jr.'s mother, father, aunt and other family members said outside court Monday that their thoughts and prayers were with the families of the four people killed and seven injured in the Thursday morning crash.

Hosey was also hurt. The 23-year-old appeared in court with his with his right arm in a sling. He conferred with a lawyer and wasn't asked to enter a plea.

His arraignment is set for Friday. He will be in court again on Sept. 21. Hosey is facing four counts of felony DUI causing death. Margo Gonzalez, 65, Hylon Cooley, 47, Gerber Ayala-Tomasino Jr., 24, and Johnni Lee Garner, 49, were all killed when a car crashed into a bus stop on Spring Mountain Road and Decatur Boulevard.

Hosey, 24, is a Las Vegas resident with arrests for six previous crimes. Metro Police officials also released a previous booking photo of Hosey from August 2012, shown with this story.

According to court records, Hosey pleaded guilty a Clark County court in June 2011 to one count of speeding 11-20 mph over the speed limit and for driving without a license. His previous arrests include:

  • April 2011: Possession of a controlled substance – non-medical marijuana – less than 1 oz.
  • July 2011: Obstructing a police officer
  • November 2011: Lewd/lascivious conduct
  • January 2012: Possession of a controlled substance – non-medical marijuana – less than 1 oz.
  • August 2012: Larceny from a person
  • August 2012: Conspiracy to commit larceny from a person

Police say the car Hosey was driving was headed east on Spring Mountain Road through the intersection of Decatur Road when he lost control of the car. The car left the road over the south curb on Spring Mountain and started to rollover as it hit seven people sitting on or waiting near a bus stop bench.

"We take for granted what we do every day," said Metro Police Sgt. Richard Strader. "This was somebody who didn't have the right mind, obviously drunk, (and) made a bad, bad choice."

"That is a shame. I have never witnessed that. I've seen it on the news. I got, like, chills in my spine when I saw that," said nearby resident Jeffrey Collici.

Among those injured in the crash were the four passengers in the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Aklilu Atanaw, 24, Maarig Tewolde, 26, and Wendim Fisenar, 31, all of Las Vegas. A fourth passenger, of San Diego, Calif., was identified as Tamesgen Adam, 22, who is listed in critical condition.

Three pedestrians were also injured in the crash: Zakiya Corner, 29, Billy Joel Ramirez-Fuentes, 31,  and Zexiang Wang, 19. All are of Las Vegas.

Hosey was initially admitted to Sunrise Hospital for observation but was booked in absentia on four counts of DUI causing death. He was released from the hospital Friday afternoon and placed in police custody.
