Delays, Confusion on Some School Bus Routes

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District is getting an earful from parents frustrated with the school bus system during this first week of school. The complaints range from long delays to confusion over routes and bus stops.

Sheena Wiggins, the mother of six, wasn't expecting the first week of school to be trouble free.

"My kids are 13, 12, 9, 8, 7 and 5," she said.

Her week started out hectic when the bus that was supposed to pick up her oldest son, a special needs student, never showed up,

"It's frustrating, I have other kids to get ready for school," she said.

Since Monday, the school district has received some 6,000 calls a day with complaints and concerns.

Bianca Gordon said her 16-year-old son was dropped off at the wrong bus stop.

"I waited and waited and I texted him. I asked him where he's at and he didn't know," she said.

"The most important thing to us is safety," said Doug Geller, CCSD Transportation Department.

He said these kinds of issues are typical the first weeks of school, especially the delays. Students at some magnet schools have experienced delays of 45 minutes. Geller said there are new drivers and new routes which add to the confusion.

"The driver announces at the stop, when they get to the stop. If students don't get off, don't say anything to driver, they might go to wrong stop," Geller said.

As for bus service for special needs students like Wiggins' son, Geller admits there may have been some registration problems and he urges parents to be patient.

"We are doing the best we can. Yes, there's more we can do and we are trying," he said.

The school district is also reminding parents to make sure their contact information on their kids school bus rosters is current. Here is a link to check bus routes. The phone number for the transportation center is 799-8100.
