LAS VEGAS -- When students return to the classroom at the end of August, there will be 300 new teachers in the Clark County School District.

Those new teachers attended a new hire orientation Thursday. It was an opportunity to prepare the educators for what they will face this school year.

"I'm in a portable, so that's challenging to have all your furniture in there, plus your students in the room," teacher Jennifer Claborn said.

She is the newest third grade teacher at Katz Elementary School. This year, teachers are learning how to reconfigure classrooms for an extra two to three students. Some teachers will be handling larger class sizes than in the past.

The new hiring training focused on the importance of teachers fostering a positive attitude in the classroom, especially with the downturn in the economy. Teachers heard how families are struggling and students are stressed. They discussed the need to help students learn how to deal with the stress,

"Sometimes without those skills, then it's hard to learn your curriculum that you need to be learning," Claborn said.

"We're going to go out in the community and make a difference," said teacher Patrick Cooper. "I want to teach the kids about things that they can do after high school, and help them do whatever they want."

Cooper grew up in poverty and didn't know dreams were possible, until a teacher took interest in his well-being. Cooper will teach special education at Arbor View High School.

"I had a speech impediment, so a speech pathologist actually helped me through it when I was in elementary school ... maybe I can make a difference and help other kids," he said.

The teachers also trained on some new technology. The teachers were introduced to a website which will allow them to keep connected with other teachers and faculty members.
