LAS VEGAS -- CJ the chimp is doing well on her road trip to her new home at a sanctuary in central Oregon.

She was seen at a veterinary clinic in Winnemucca, Nev., earlier Wednesday in order to pass health requirements set by the state of Oregon. Her co-owner, Lee Watkinson, who is driving with CJ on her road trip, said he was told Wednesday afternoon that CJ needs to be tested for salmonella before being allowed to continue on her trip.

Chimps Inc. picked up CJ Tuesday morning and is driving her to the sanctuary near Bend, Ore., where she will live with seven other chimpanzees. She had been staying at the home of Las Vegas magician Dirk Arthur since her second escape into a northwest Las Vegas neighborhood this weekend.

Sanctuary director Marla O'Donnell said CJ will soon have all the room she wants to run and play.

"We have several outdoor structures for enrichment," O'Donnell said. "We have organic gardens (and) aerial tunnels so they can get above sanctuary grounds and look out and explore.

"CJ appears healthy, happy and enjoying this road trip tremendously."

When CJ arrives at Chimps Inc., she will be placed in quarantine, but will be able to see her fellow chimpanzees. Dr. Susan Lambeth, an expert on chimpanzee's, will evaluate CJ and oversee her introduction to the other chimps.

CJ's co-owner Timmi Derosa was cited twice by the county for CJ's escape and she could face more citations for not properly caring for the animal.

Another chimp, Buddy, was shot and killed by police during CJ's first escape.

CJ is expected to arrive at the sanctuary Thursday.
