LAS VEGAS -- Republican congressional nominee Danny Tarkanian said he made a mistake with comments his opponents call racially insensitive.

Tarkanian told supporters of his campaign for Nevada Congressional District 4 they should "pretend we're black" in order to get votes.

After making the statement, Tarkanian told the I-Team he was "inarticulate."

Tarkanian said he misspoke when speaking about how much he's willing to campaign for the African-American vote against Democratic nominee Steven Horsford, who is black.

Tarkanian made his statement last week at a fundraiser.

A video shot by an attendee of the fundraiser recorded Tarkanian's statement and was confirmed by the Tarkanian campaign.

"We could be like Steven Horsford, who's not doing anything with that community, and you know, pretend we're black and maybe try to get some votes if that's where it is," Tarkanian said at the fundraiser.

Tarkanian, speaking to the I-Team Monday, said, "Obviously, I made an inarticulate statement that is being misconstrued right now. What I meant to say now is, ‘It's clear that Mr. Horsford has ignored the community in the time he's been a state senator and he can't expect to get votes from there.'"

Tarkanian said he called and left a message with Horsford on Monday to explain himself.

Horsford, in a statement released Monday, said, "Tarkanian has proven that he is bankrupt in more than one way, and it's time he takes responsibility for not only his actions, but also his words. I am simply disappointed in Danny Tarkanian."
