LAS VEGAS -- As more states become interested in the drone industry, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is developing a bachelor's program to train the next generation of engineers.
Before Nevada loses aerospace industry jobs to other states, UNLV aims to be one of the first in the country to offer remote pilot vehicle training.
"We think there will be four to five months of intense training," said Rama Venkat, chairman of the university's electrical and computer engineering department. "We will adapt the Air Force's course manual and adopt it for civilian application."
The bachelor's degree would focus on unmanned vehicle engineering, Venkat said.
"Even if you develop the courses, the workforce, train the pilots, we want the manufacturing to happen in Las Vegas," he said. "(Then) they can employ electrical engineers, mechanical engineers and our faculty will be able to do (research and development) projects with that."
