CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval is wishing former Nevada statesman Paul Laxalt a happy birthday with a special proclamation.
Sandoval issued a proclamation declaring Thursday Paul Laxalt Day in Nevada, in honor of his 90th birthday.
Laxalt served one term each as lieutenant governor and governor of Nevada in the 1960s and early 1970s. During his time in the Governor's Mansion, he worked with California Gov. Ronald Reagan to create the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, an agency charged with preserving Lake Tahoe. He also helped establish Nevada's first community colleges and medical school.
He ran for the U.S. Senate in 1974, was re-elected in 1980 and served through 1986.
Sandoval was an intern for Laxalt in the Senate and said his guidance and friendship have helped him in his own career.
