LAS VEGAS -- Caesars Entertainment has obtained a key county permit that allows it to build the world's tallest observation wheel.
"This is the beginning of where the legs will attach and ultimately go up to the hub and spindle and rise up to the full height of the 550 feet," said David Codiga, executive project director.
Caesars Entertainment is betting big on the $550 million project. It will be a 520-foot diameter wheel with 28 cabins which can each accommodate as many as 40 people. One revolution will take 30 minutes and give riders a 360 degree view of the Las Vegas Strip. They will also experience a pre-show which will include how the attraction was built.
"The look of Las Vegas is definitely changing," Codiga said.
It is being billed as the largest observation wheel in the world and parts used in the project have come from all over the world. The steel is from Utah and the glass is from Italy. Designers say the wheel is strong enough to stand high winds, earthquakes and the hot desert heat.
"All of those features had to be analyzed, detailed and included in the design," project manager Randy Printz said.
The High Roller is part of The Linq project which includes 200,000 square feet of retail, dining and entertainment space. Everything will be geared towards Generation X and Generation Y visitors who range in age from 21 to 46.
"By 2015 over 50 percent of the visitorship to Las Vegas will be in the Gen X Gen Y demo so we want to make sure we're offering amenities that cater to that customer base," said Vice President and General Manager of the Linq Jon Gray.
Project directors hope The Linq will make Las Vegas memorable for millions of people. Ticket prices aren't finalized yet, but the project director said they'll be comparable to the London Eye. Those tickets are around $25. The High Roller is expected to be completed in late 2013.
