Fact Check: Super PAC Ad Slams Obama's Record

Posted: Updated:

Claim: A new advertisement from Republican-leaning super political action committee American Crossroads, which is airing on KLAS-TV Channel 8, states: "What happened to Barack Obama? The press and even Democrats say his attacks on Mitt Romney's business record are ‘misleading, unfair and untrue' ... So why is Obama attacking? He's added $4 billion in new debt every single day. Unemployment stuck above 8 percent. Family incomes falling. Barack Obama can't run on that record."

Verdict: Partly true and partly misleading. Unemployment nationally is stuck above 8 percent, and it has been even worse in Nevada. The total public debt, according to Treasury Department website TreasuryDirect.gov, has grown by more than $5.2 trillion since President Obama took office in January 2009. Divided by the days the Democrat has been in office, it works out to roughly $4.1 billion in new debt on average each day. The declining family income claim was taken from an April 30 Bloomberg story stating that median household income as of March was down $4,300 from the time Obama took office. What's interesting is that Bloomberg reported in a separate story the same day that consumer incomes in March rose by four-tenths of 1 percent, the most in three months. The story linked to a chart showing that U.S. personal income nosedived in the last half of 2011 but made up some lost ground since rebounding in December. It is also true that the Obama campaign has misled viewers with ads claiming that Republican presidential candidate Romney's former private equity company, Bain Capital, pioneered outsourcing jobs overseas. But there are legitimate reasons why Obama is attacking Romney's tenure at Bain. Romney's claim that he is a job creator is the centerpiece of his campaign. Yet Romney continues to be vague about his years at Bain. What his campaign lacks are specifics such as: How many jobs did Bain help create during his tenure, when were those jobs created and in what industries? Were any of those jobs created for foreigners and, if so, in which countries and for how many workers? Conversely, how many jobs, if any, did Bain help eliminate in the U.S. or replace with workers abroad? Detailed answers to questions such as those would give the public more clarity about who is right and who is wrong regarding Romney's years at Bain.
