Fact Check: Romney Ad Blasts Obama for Misleading Bain Attack

Posted: Updated:

Claim: An advertisement endorsed by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney that is airing on KLAS-TV Channel 8 has a narrator who states: "The Obama outsourcing attacks, misleading, unfair and untrue. There was no evidence that Mitt Romney shipped jobs overseas. Candidate Obama lied about Hillary Clinton." Clinton then says: "So shame on you Barack Obama."

Verdict: Partially true and partially misleading. Numerous national media outlets and fact checkers have found that the campaign to re-elect President Obama has provided little evidence that Romney shipped American jobs overseas while head of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The Washington Post wrote a story in June linking Bain to outsourcing but no one has produced solid data on the number of jobs, if any, that Americans lost to foreign workers as a result of Romney's tenure at the company. Where Romney's ad becomes misleading is in use of the Clinton clip from the heated 2008 Democratic primary campaign. A viewer can get the impression that Clinton continues to despise Obama when, in fact, she became his secretary of state a year after the "shame you" comment and has been sent by the president on numerous sensitive missions overseas. Let's also not forget that Clinton was by Obama's side when top White House staffers monitored the killing of terrorist Osama bin Laden.
