Fact Check: Ad Rips Obama For 'Bad Economy'

Posted: Updated:

Claim: A new ad airing on KLAS-TV Channel 8 by Crossroads GPS, a Republican-leaning organization, states: "America's jobless rate is still too high. Barack Obama's got lots of excuses for the bad economy...But Obama never blames Washington's wild spending and skyrocketing debt. Tell Obama, for real job growth, cut the debt."

Verdict: Partially true and partially misleading. It's hard to argue with the claim that this nation's unemployment rate is still too high. This is especially true in Nevada, where the jobless rate remains in double digits. It is also hard to argue that President Obama, a Democrat, has made excuses for the poor economy. So, too, have Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, congressional Republicans, economists, pundits and so forth. But the ad conveniently omits Obama's repeated claims that congressional Republicans stand in the way of job growth in part because they refuse to support increased spending on highway, bridge and other infrastructure projects. What makes the ad partially misleading is the implication that spending and debt in Washington are the key reasons the economy is ailing. What about the collapsed housing market that drained personal wealth from a substantial share of the American public? What about banks that continue to make it difficult for small businesses to secure the loans they need to expand and hire more workers?
