I-Team: Apartment Building had History of Fires

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The history of major fires at the Sonoma Shadows Apartments led the I-Team to look at the building's safety record.

The Sonoma Shadows Apartment complex is nearly 30 years old. There was a deadly fire there in March 2000. At that time, the complex was called Cedar Springs. A 2-year-old boy, and his sisters, aged 4 and 5 years old died in that fire. Their mother was able to escape. Another resident, an elderly disabled man, also lost his life.

It's unclear whether the complex was rebuilt to a more modern and safer fire code after that fire. That rebuilding happened a few years before apartment sprinklers were required.

"There's many of them that now have sprinklers. There's some that have fire department connections so our trucks can immediately connect and water begins to flow. We do as much as we can to improve the fire code and make it safer," said Clark County Fire Chief Bertral Washington.

He says Sonoma Shadows Apartments passed its most recent inspection in 2007. A resident complained about missing and damaged fire extinguishers. There is no record of any fire inspection in the past five years.

According to Clark County public records, the complex has been owned by the same company since 2004, with no major liens or judgements against it. The complex was one of high profile developer Alex Spanos first Las Vegas projects.
