LAS VEGAS - The Professional Arena Soccer League is hoping to strike gold in Las Vegas. The indoor soccer league announced Tuesday Las Vegas will be home to its newest franchise – the Las Vegas Legends.
The PASL isn't the first league to try and bring professional soccer to Las Vegas. Indoor and outdoor franchises in Las Vegas have come and gone over the years. Now, it's the Las Vegas Legends' turn.
"The community is hungry for this," said Las Vegas Legends President Meir Cohen. "There are a lot of soccer fanatics in this town, and they deserve to have a team."
The $50,000 fee paid to the PASL ensures the Legends will be the 15th franchise for at least this season.
"If they match what the hockey team is doing here, they'll be doing very well," said PASL Commissioner Kevin Milliken. "The hockey team, from what (Orleans Arena Executive Director Darren Davis) told me… four to five thousand a game."
Team officials say a family of four can attend one of the eight home games for less than $50. PASL games are typically exciting. They feature four 15-minute quarters with no off-sides and 17 goals per game on average.
"The reason we all go to sports is to see slam dunks, home runs and fights or whatever and all the other things," said Legends Coach Greg Howes. "So, we will have a lot of attention to the entertainment side of the game for our fans, but we will also be committed to making sure what we need to do to be successful in the win-loss column."
The players will come from all over the world. They play for the love of the game with the low end salary at $2,000 a month.
"The business model (has) got to make sense. If people expect to make hundreds of thousands here, it's not going to happen," Cohen said.
Most professional Las Vegas franchises aren't big moneymakers, but the Legends could find a niche audience - much like the Las Vegas Wranglers - in a town that has been a graveyard for minor league sports.
"I'm thrilled that he's chosen us to take a shot at it, and I really feel confident he's going to make a success of it," said Davis.
If you think you can play soccer, the Legends are holding open tryouts August 20 - 25 at the Las Vegas Indoor Soccer Complex located at 1400 N. Rampart Blvd.
