If your home was built before 1980, do yourself a favor and check out your breaker panel. If you see anything that says "Federal Pacific Stab Lok" you may want to get an electrician to your home ASAP.
These breakers have been linked to causing several electrical fires across the country. The CPSC is aware of the problem but chose not to issue a recall sighting budgetary issues back in 1983 when the problem surfaced. The company never issued a recall because it went out of business. As a result, these breakers are in millions of homes and people don't know they could result in a problem.
If you want to have your breaker panel inspected, the Master Electrician I interviewed in the story, Luther Goulding of Goulding Electric said he would check yours out for you. Call him at 702-240-7770.
