Free Summer Food Program Wants to Get the Word Out

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS --  A summer food program designed to help low-income families will start next week. The program offers free food to children who usually rely on meals given out at school.

This past year, about 170,000 Clark County students received free and reduced meals at school. That number was up by more than 20,000 from the previous school year.

Three Square food bank is offering free food to children during the summer months when they are out of school. The group reports that not enough children are taking advantage of the free food program. Three Square wants to make sure families know the Summer Food Program is available, with no questions asked, as long as the recipient is a child under the age of 18.

"We want to get this message out about how easy it is to call, click or text to find out the nearest location," said John Livingston, Three Square.

Summer Food Program Sites

There are numerous meal sites around the valley. Last year Three Square served about 2,000 meals a day. This summer, they hope to feed 4,000 children.

The sites open on Monday, June 11. Children do not need any identification or proof that they attend the school in the area.
