NTSB Says, 'Mechanical Failure' Caused Utah Plane Crash

Posted: Updated:

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Federal investigators have the cause in the crash-landing of a firefighting aircraft in Nevada but the investigation continues into another crash in Utah that killed two pilots.

The National Transportation Safety Board says mechanical failure forced an air tanker fighting a Nevada wildfire to make a crash landing in which there were no injuries. A landing gear door failed to open.

An NTSB investigator is at the scene of the remote Utah crash, trying to determine what went wrong there. The company that owns the Lockheed P2V said it believes a cockpit voice recorder survived the wreck.

Investigators also will interview the pilot of the tanker's "spotter" plane, used to guide the tanker as it dropped fire retardant.

The massive fire in southwestern New Mexico continues to burn over 404 square miles.

Firefighters are building fire lines and conducting more burnout operations.
