High School Students Mourn Teen Killed in Crash

LAS VEGAS -- Police know alcohol was involved in a crash early Monday morning that killed 16-year-old Isaac Polu. The crash also sent two other people to the hospital with critical injuries.

Polu was a freshman at Liberty High School and a football player. His fellow students are now facing the sadness of losing a classmate.

"It's going to be different without him," said Gina Maeda, a classmate. She knew Polu for five months but says he made a lasting impression. "He was like a big burst of joy. He was never down, always happy, he always made jokes and made everybody laugh," she said.

Although she is a junior, she met the likeable freshman through friends on the Liberty High School football field.

"A couple of our football players are his cousins and he was just a great kid," said Rich Muraco, Liberty's head football coach.

He says Polu had transferred from Desert Oasis School in January. He had yet to play a game, but it didn't matter.

"Everybody was drawn to him; football players and regular students," Muraco said.

"Athletics aside, him as a person, and the impact he had on so many kids, was just tremendous," said Lou Markouzis, activities athletic director.

He says the entire Patriot family is a team and is helping each other heal.

There will be a barbecue fundraiser on the school's football field Thursday at 1:15 p.m. and a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. The events are also for Lionel Nacua, the father of another football player who died this week from health complications.
