NORTH LAS VEGAS -- A Smiths Grocery Store in North Las Vegas reopened Monday morning after a tractor trailer fire behind the store late Saturday night forced it to close.
The fire caused extensive interior damage to the store and minor damage outside. The store was shut down until the fire department and health districted decided Monday morning it was safe to reopen.
The City of North Las Vegas Fire Department responded to the fire at 2255 E. Centennial at 10:05 p.m. Saturday. The trailer fire appeared to be spreading heavy smoke into the grocery store and inside a large metal storage container.
The fire department evacuated all customers and workers from the store.
The placement of the trailer and its material made it difficult for firefighters to reach. It was also full of cardboard boxes and similar materials on fire. The store skylights were used to help remove the smoke from the store.
North Las Vegas Fire and Clark County Fire Departments contained the fire to the trailer within an hour of arrival.
Firefighters remained on scene until 4 a.m. Sunday, searching for smaller and hidden fires.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Smiths estimates damage to the store at $500,000.
