LAS VEGAS - One woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle near Owens Avenue and Mojave Road.

The accident happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday evening. Police say a Dodge Neon was traveling eastbound on Owens, when the driver, 23-year-old Cristina Cortes, lost control of the vehicle. The Neon veered onto a sidewalk and struck the 63-year-old pedestrian.

The victim was taken to University Medical Center where she died. Nearby residents were shaken by the accident.

"My heart and prayers go out to the family, and I'm sorry this whole thing happened," said nearby resident Brenda Aviles. "I'm terrified. My kids (are) out here, and I don't feel safe anymore."

This is the 39th fatal accident this year in Metro Police jurisdiction. It's the 12th fatal accident to involve a pedestrian. The Clark County Coroner's Office will identify the victim.
