I-Team: Letter Details Scope of Potential Police Consolidation

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - The scope of a possible Metro Police takeover of the North Las Vegas Police Department is detailed in a document obtained late Monday afternoon by the 8 News NOW I-Team.

As the I-Team's Colleen McCarty first reported last week, city leaders are exploring a possible transfer of police services in a bid to balance the city budget.

In a letter to Metro Police Sheriff Doug Gillespie, North Las Vegas City Manager Tim Hacker asks for a cost estimate for Metro to provide police services to North Las Vegas residents.

The letter requests a range of options to include in a Metro takeover of some police functions. The options range from some services such as detention, special operations and narcotics to a complete transfer of all police services. The letter also notes a "merger is not a fiscally viable option."

Those copied on the March 28th letter include North Las Vegas Mayor Shari Buck, members of the North Las Vegas City Council and the North Las Vegas Police chief.

Hacker told the I-Team last week that shedding police services is a last resort he hopes to avoid with union concessions. The city faces a budget deficit of between $31 million and $33 million for the upcoming fiscal year.
