LAS VEGAS - Metro Police are investigating an accident in which a vehicle struck a pedestrian. The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. at Lake East Drive and Lake Sahara Drive near Sahara Avenue and Durango Drive.

Police say the pedestrian, a male in his late 60's, was crossing outside a crosswalk, when a Buick struck him. The driver says he did not see the man, who was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident. Police say the pedestrian was also wearing headphones.

The driver rushed to the aid of the pedestrian, who was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. Metro urges pedestrians to be extra careful on busy roads and neighborhood streets like this one.

"Cross where you can be seen. Wear clothing you can be seen in and pay attention," said Metro Police Sgt. Richard Strader. "This individual had their headphones on his head, and he couldn't hear anything. He's not going to hear the threat of that vehicle with tires rolling across the asphalt."

Police say the driver of the buick was not impaired and not at fault.
