LAS VEGAS -- Nine family members escaped injury in a morning house fire in northwest Las Vegas. The column of black smoke could be seen around the valley.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue say the blaze started around 6:30 a.m. at a home on Thom Blvd. near Gowan Rd. and Decatur Blvd.

According to spokesman Tim Szymanski, the may have been caused by an electrical problem. The fire spread quickly around the yard and to the house. A family member, who was staying in a motor home in the yard, told fire crews he was awakened by two of the family's dogs barking and he was able to alert the others to the fire. The family lost two of their dogs in that blaze.

The American Red Cross is assisting the home's occupants. There is $200,000 in damage to the home.
