Metro Officer Involved in Shooting Thought he had been Stabbed

LAS VEGAS -- The Metro Police officer involved in a shooting at a Travel Inn says he thought he had been stabbed and was about to be stabbed again when he shot the suspect.

The suspect, Larry Barber, was wounded in the shooting and is now facing several charges. The incident happened last Tuesday at the hotel on Fremont Street. In the arrest report, the officers say they spotted Barber jaywalking across Fremont Street then enter the hotel.

The officer involved in the shooting approached the suspect. He says Barber had a hand in the front pocket of his pants. The officer told him to take his hand out. That is when the officer says Barber drew a knife on him and tried to stab him with it. The officer then pulled out his weapon and shot the suspect has he took another swipe with the knife.

In the arrest report, Barber says he told the officer he had a knife and was trying to give it to him. He says he knew he had warrants for his arrest. He says when he saw the officers approaching he knew he would be arrested and sent back to jail.

Barber is now facing charges of attempted murder, resisting an officer, assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.
