LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating a deadly six car accident, possibly caused by drunk driving.
Officers say the accident happened around 8:40 p.m. Sunday on Rainbow Boulevard, near Wigwam Avenue. The crash caused one car to roll over and burst into flames, and another to crash into a nearby business. One person involved in the accident died on scene.
Officers also confirm that the driver who is thought to have caused the accident is under investigation for drunk driving. That driver was taken to the hospital for alcohol blood level testing.
The pileup closed a section of Rainbow Boulevard between Wigwam and Shelbourne Avenues for several hours.
This is the third suspected drunk driving accident in the Las Vegas area over Super Bowl weekend. A 15-year-old boy is recovering after being hit early Sunday morning. In that accident, police say a woman driving an Acura left the road, collided into a bus shelter near Spring Mountain and El Camino Roads. The teen was rushed to University Medical Center in critical condition.
Another suspected drunk driving accident happened in North Las Vegas near Clayton Street and Ranch House Road. Police say a 52-year-old woman was driving at a high rate of speed, when she rolled her vehicle. Police say the suspect's speed and alcohol were factors in that crash.
Police across the valley had extra officers out patrolling, as well as checkpoints set up, to crack down on drunk driving Sunday. Metro officers arrested at least 13 people during the safety exercise.
