LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross has survived a recall effort against him.
Councilman Ross easily defeated challenger Byron Goynes in a Ward 6 recall election Tuesday. Ross secured 70% of the vote. Goynes received 30%.
6,165 people voted in the recall election. Ross, a two-term councilman, received 4,319 votes. That compares with 2,375 who voted for him in 2009 and 3,199 in 2005.
The heated contest between Ross and Goynes was the result of a recall effort funded largely by car dealer Joe Scala.
Scala was forced to close his dealership in the Centennial Hills Auto Mall in December 2010 due to a zoning dispute. Scala says he asked Ross for help to keep the business open, but claims Ross didn't. Ross contends Scala didn't take steps Ross told him to take.
1,845 voted for Byron Goynes in the recall election. Ross' term is set to expire in 2013.
