Man Dead in Vegas Taxi Police Custody Identified

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Records show that a 42-year-old man who died after collapsing unconscious in police custody at the Clark County jail was a convicted sex offender who served time in Nevada State Prison.

The Clark County coroner identified the dead man Thursday as James Michael Venters. A cause of death won't be known until blood toxicology tests are completed in several weeks.

Police say Venters struggled with taxi authority police officers during his arrest a little before 7 p.m. Tuesday following a dispute over a taxi fare in downtown Las Vegas.

Jailers performed CPR, but Venters was pronounced dead at a hospital at 7:45 p.m.

Venters is the fifth person to die in custody in Las Vegas this month.

Others included two jail inmates and a man in federal immigration custody.
