LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas police are still looking for the men responsible for the shooting death of a Desert Pines High School senior. Police say no one has come forward with information about who fired the shots outside a house party early Sunday morning that killed 17-year-old Betty Pinkney.
Several hundred students held a memorial this morning on the football field where they released balloons and told stories about their memories of Betty. Pinkney was a straight A student, who also ran track. But her life was cut short just before 1 a.m. Sunday.
According to witnesses, at least 80 kids were inside the house when two men got into an argument and were asked to leave. Once outside, at least one of them fired shots back at the house. Pinkney, standing just inside the doorway, was hit in the chest and died a short time later.
Her friends say she originally had other plans that night.
"We were supposed to go to a movie and go bowling that night, but her best friend hit her up and said, 'Let's go to a party.' Betty is so nice, she's like, 'Sure, why not? Let's go,' and she went," said Pinkney's friend Dominique Hopkins.
Since her death, Pinkney's friends have created a Facebook page and a YouTube video. They are also selling t-shirts to help pay for her funeral.
Tuesday afternoon, police held a news conference to discuss the case. They are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555. You can remain anonymous.
