Man Sentenced in Social Security Scheme

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas man who stole $525,326 in disability benefits from the Social Security Administration received a two-year prison sentence from a federal judge, Nevada's U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said.

Nelson Vazquez, 58, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks after pleaded guilty in October 2011 to one count of theft of government funds. Hicks also ordered that Vazquez pay restitution to the Social Security Administration. He was permitted to self-report to federal prison by March 12.

According to the plea agreement, Vazquez received Social Security benefits between 1976 and May 2000. The Social Security Administration terminated Vazquez' benefits then because he had been employed and was still able to work. His disability benefits were reinstated in December 2003, but it was later determined that Vazquez was operating the Las Vegas accounting firm Vazquez & Associates while unlawfully receiving benefits through September 2010.

The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Yang.
