I-Team: UNLV Stadium Proposal Gets Revamped

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- UNLV officials say they plan to spend about half of what they originally were going to spend to build an expandable 40,000 seat stadium. Now, they plan to build a fixed stadium with 50,000 seats.

It was initially projected that the arena would cost more than $700 million but is now in the price range of $300 to $400 million. The cost savings is because the stadium won't be expandable for different venues.

Thursday, the Board of Regents gave UNLV and Majestic Realty a 180-day extension on their preliminary negotiating agreement. That gives both groups more time to come up with a new plan.

Drawings of the new proposed football stadium are not available but 8 News NOW was told it will be a domed football stadium -- perhaps with a retractable roof. It will also include what's being called a University Village on Tropicana and Swenson avenues with shops, restaurants and campus dorms.

There will be a finalized plan by the spring with construction hiring planned as early as the fall.

UNLV President Neal Smatresk says the stadium will be built entirely with money from private investors.
