Charities Need Thanksgiving Help

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and many families in southern Nevada will not be able to afford a holiday meal, let alone feed their loved ones on a daily basis. More than ever, it is critical to give to those in need during these tough economic times.

Inside the main pantry of Catholic Charities, they still need more of the everyday groceries that will make a big difference for so many this Thanksgiving.

"I am unemployed and don't get unemployment again now, so it's just kind of hard right now," said Marcie Moss.

Moss is a single mother of four and this is the first time she has ever been to Catholic Charities. The agency said about half of their clients have never used their services before until this year.

Catholic Charities said there has been more families coming in -- those who have recently lost their jobs -- and it is tough to see as we get closer to the holidays.

"Many families are struggling to put that turkey on the table and we want to help make that holiday tradition continue here in the Las Vegas area," said Phillip Hollon with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.

With unemployment numbers in Nevada still over 12 percent, Catholic Charities expects to serve many families through the holidays and beyond.

For now, they need a lot of turkeys. They gave away 5,000 last year. Right now, they have about 3,000 in the pantry, so there is still a way to go a week before Thanksgiving.

Donations are accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they need everything from food to cash.
