NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Homeowners on Strawberry Roan Road in North Las Vegas say a vacant two-story home on the street is a nuisance.
"Sometimes, we see kids inside the house, and that's why we call police," said neighbor Marcello Martin.
"I don't know if they're partying, but they're in there," added neighbor Jason Burkland. "I don't ever see alcohol or drinking, but they're just always there. It's been a problem that house has brought to us, the whole neighborhood."
North Las Vegas Fire Department investigators say a fire at the home Saturday was set to hurt responding crews.
"It was determined not only was this fire an arson fire, but that it was deliberately set in order to injure firefighters," North Las Vegas Fire Department Captain Cedric Williams said.
Attic insulation, debris and graffiti dotted the inside of the vacant home. Outside the home, parts of the electricity meter appeared to be ripped out. Wiring on the phone tap also show signs of tampering. Cables run up the side of the house.
Investigators will not say how the blaze started or what leads them to believe firefighters were the targets, but they're determined to find and prosecute whoever is responsible.
"We definitely will not tolerate people intentionally setting fires in order to injure firefighters," Capt. Williams said. "The charges that will be coming down are definitely that serious to include attempted murder."
Realtor.com says the home sold for $286,000 in 2004, but less than $40,000 last year. It's an empty home neighbors think is luring questionable activity. They can't believe the homeowners association has yet to alert police.
"Any spots in the driveway like that, we get a fine, and it's pretty substantial - which is why I'm surprised there's nothing happening with that house," Burkland said. "The homeowners association is active. It's been a problem for a while."
The fire caused $100,000 in damage.
Authorities are still investigating if kids or squatters have occupied the house.
