LAS VEGAS -- More than 250 low income seniors got their wish realized Saturday when volunteers from downtown businesses pitched in to improve the Robert Gordon Senior Recreation Center.

At least 200 volunteers grabbed shovels and planted shrubs and trees to help beautify the center. Other volunteers painted walls inside and outside the center. Crews also organized a food drive to help the seniors with their day-to-day needs.

Many of the seniors live on fixed incomes. "Sometimes they get overlooked as a community and we want to make sure we are always dealing with poverty and food. Sometimes the seniors get left out and that's kind of one of our biggest focuses now," volunteer Steven Bautista said.

Downtown Cares Las Vegas was organized by Metro Police, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, Channel 8 and several other businesses.
