First Bear Hunt Draws to a Close

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- State wildlife officials are preparing for the end of Nevada's first bear hunt.

Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says the season will end if one more female bear is killed. Since the season opened Aug. 20, hunters have killed 12 bears -- five females and seven males. State wildlife commissioners set a limit of 20 bears that can be killed, and of those, no more than six can be female.

The season, scheduled to close Dec. 31, will end earlier if either of those thresholds is met. Healy says if a female is killed this weekend, his agency plans to get out the word as fast as possible to hunters and the public that the season is over.
