Postal Inspectors Search for Mailroom Thief

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is searching for a burglar responsible for a string of mailroom thefts. Surveillance cameras reveal the break-ins, which have occurred at residential complexes around the valley.

Maria Wyatt was stunned to learn mail was stolen at West Park Condominiums on Reno Avenue near Decatur Boulevard.

"I am frightened, because I have lived here for eight years, and nothing like this has happened before," she said.

Some residents fear the thief was after money, checks or credit card information. Resident Travis Otto is concerned about this type of crime.

"It's annoying. I don't like it. It's bad stuff, but I guess that's partly due with the lack of jobs, people turning more to negative manners," he said.

Investigators say the burglar struck West Park Condominiums at 12:30 a.m. October 16.

The next day at 7:17 a.m., his target was the Camden Cove Apartments on Rochelle Avenue near Decatur Boulevard.

His spree continued at the Pueblo at Santa Fe apartments in the northwest. He hit up the mailboxes there on Rainbow Boulevard and Rancho Drive just after 4 a.m. October 21.

"He appears to be in his mid to late twenties, possibly Hispanic," said postal inspector Patricia Armstrong. "He had a shaved head and possibly a mustache or goatee, and in some of the surveillance photos, we see him wearing Raiders football gear and/or a Pirates baseball team cap."

Private letters meant for you or even junk mail could be valuable to a thief and dangerous in the wrong hands.

"People's mail is important to them, and we definitely want to get this guy," Armstrong said.

A criminal can get up to five years in prison for each piece of stolen mail.
