Chart: Jobs Trend by Industry

It is amazing how fast fortunes can change in the Silver State. In 2005, the Las Vegas metro area enjoyed one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at four percent. From 2006 to 2010, four short years, the metro's jobless rate nearly quadrupled to 15.6 percent, the nation's highest. All employment sectors in Southern Nevada, save one, saw declines during the 2006 - 2010 period. Only the Education/Health category, driven largely by growth in the heath care sector, saw employment gains over the past five years. The hardest hit category by far is construction, which saw jobs shrink from 109,800 in 2006 to an estimated 41,900 in 2011, according to jobs data from the Nevada Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation.

Despite a small bit of recovery, the total number of jobs in 2011 was still far below employment levels in 2005 and nearly 120,000 less than the peak in 2006.
