LAS VEGAS - Two Nevada Democrats kicked off their campaigns for Congress Thursday. Former U.S. Rep. Dina Titus and State Sen. Ruben Kihuen will face each other in the Congressional District 1 primary. Titus touts her experience, while Kihuen says he has a better understanding of the people of District 1.

While both candidates agree on many important issues that face Nevadans, their approaches are quite different.

"You know that my voice is loud and strong, and it can't be ignored. This voice speaks out for all people in District One," Titus said. "District One needs someone with a proven record whose been there, stood up and knows how to get things done."

"When we're campaigning, we're going to talk about all those issues that Latinos and the entire state of Nevada cares about," Kihuen said. "My family has lost a house before. My parents have been without a job before. I have been without health care before. These are issues I have personally been through and what Nevada is going through as we speak right now."

They agree people in Nevada need to get back to work, fight foreclosures and have access to education.

Kihuen feels he has an advantage in one area, but was pressed about relying on the Hispanic vote.

"I'm not going to take the Hispanic vote for granted," he said. "I don't expect Latinos to vote for me because I'm Latino. If you look at my last name, it's not even Latino. So, I'm going to have to go out there and sell myself to them."

Titus kept to the issues and stands by her experience and voting record.

"We've got to create jobs, and I believe we do that through investing in education, technology, renewable and in infrastructure," she said. "That's how you put people back to work."

Democrats in District One will choose their nominee in the Nevada primary next June.
