Wednesday's cChild today is not seeking an adoptive home...just an adult friend, a mentor. A big brother or big sister who can make a difference in a child's life with the gift of time.
We thought maybe the best way to explain Big Brothers Big Sisters was to introduce you to a little brother and a little sister...both of whom are waiting to be matched. Two of hundreds who are waiting.
A-J is seven, and as you can see has lots of energy to burn. He knows all about big brothers, 'cause his brother has a mentor.
"So your brother has a big brother? Yes. And that's why you want one? Yes. What do you see that they're doing that you wish you could do? Go to skate city, go swimming with each other, and go to his house and eat with them and stuff," says AJ
"You know, kids just need adults who care about them, and will step up and be an additional support for them," says Molly, the program coordinator for Southern Nevada's Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
Molly Latham sees kids like AJ, and knows what a difference a committed adult can make in their lives.
"It's not just picking any adult and any child out of the hat, and putting them together...we're looking for the right adult for each child," adds Molly.
Girls need mentors, too...and Avery knows having a big sister is different than mom:
"Well, my mom is someone that is like...if I told her a secret about a prank I pulled on a friend or something like that...I might get in trouble, but if I told it to my big sister, then she'd understand," says Avery.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has a number of ways to plug into their programs. They're looking for people who are committed, supportive, willing.
"Other than that, it's just a good heart, a clean driving record, certainly if you're gonna drive a kid, good intent, time, and dedication.
Big brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada needs mentors who are willing to commit several hours a month to their "little".
