Huge Donation to Agassi Foundation to Teach More Students

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegan Andre Agassi has made it his mission to help underprivileged kids get a good education. He built on his tennis stardom with a glitzy annual fundraiser and the event always raised millions. But this year's was way over the top.

Over $26 million was raised for the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education, with $18 million donated by a private donor and friend of Agassi. There are now big plans on where that money is going.

Agassi Prep senior, Imani Williams, remembers when the school had only 150 students. She started in grade school.

The charter school has grown since 2003 and what started with a few hundred students has grown to around 1,000.

"We do see a real success with the students that started with us in elementary school and continues with us all the way through high school," said Cisco Aguilar with the Agassi Foundation.

Aguilar says every graduated senior has been accepted into a college, and with the $26 million raised over the weekend, they'll be able to graduate even more.

"We'll hopefully jump again to decrease the demand on the waiting list," said Aguilar.

Meaning the money will allow the school to increase student enrollment by 300, guaranteeing more students from the neighborhood on Martin Luther King Boulevard a quality education.

"We really want to make sure we're serving the kids of this community and not those who have access to a quality education," said Aguilar.

With hundreds of kids on the waiting list, a good chunk of the money will allow more of them to start school here next fall.
