Cool at School: Help for Needy Families

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Challenging circumstances make getting an education extra challenging for a lot of kids at Richard Rundle Elementary.

"We all know it's hard to learn when you're hungry. It's hard to learn when your shoes don't fit," said Principal Laura Dickensheets.

Now, the school community is doing something to help those kids in need. This week, Rundle is celebrating the second anniversary of its Family Resource Center.

The center assists families with food, clothing, school supplies and access to medical information.

"Sometimes kids need medical assistance and the families don't know where to go or what's available to them. We try to bring those things in so our kids are comfortable, they are happy and they are able to learn," said Dickensheets.

The Family Resource Center also provides things like nutrition classes and English classes for parents who struggle with the language.

Parents say having those resources available makes all the difference: "It helped me a lot. It makes me more secure because I can ask anytime I want help for my kids," said Angelica Mendoza.

The center is funded entirely on donations.
