Former Archbishop who Gave JFK Eulogy Dies at 98

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS -- Former Archbishop Philip Matthew Hannan, who gave the eulogy for President John F. Kennedy and later served more than three decades as the head of the New Orleans Roman Catholic Archdiocese, has died. He was 98.

The archdiocese said Hannan died peacefully shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday. Hannan was assigned to New Orleans in 1965 from Washington, where he had been auxiliary bishop since 1956. When Kennedy was assassinated, the president's widow asked Hannan to deliver the eulogy because of their close personal relationship.

Hannan also eulogized Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, who was shot in Los Angeles during his 1968 campaign for president.
