2010 Public Employee Salary Footnotes

Salary and compensation information was provided to 8 News NOW a number of public agencies under the Freedom of Information Act. 8 News NOW is publishing this data so that taxpayers, who fund public employee salaries, can understand how their tax dollars are being spent.

We've grouped salary information into four categories: Base, Overtime, Other, Separation, and Benefits. The specific items that are included in each category are listed below. Please note that not every agency provided 8 News NOW with benefit numbers, so the total compensation numbers for these agencies do not reflect the total cost to taxpayers. In addition, some salaries are inflated by one-time separation payouts - the money earned when an employee retires, takes a buyout or is laid-off.

Las Vegas Metro Police
Metro supplied definitions of their pay types, which you can view here. Additionally, Metro officers often work for third parties providing security. Pay for these duties is included in their compensation from the police department. However, Metro is reimbursed by the third parties and  this portion of compensation is not funded directly by taxpayers. Therefore, we elected to exclude this reimbursed pay from the salary database.

  • Many employee's salaries are split between the LVVWD and the SNWA at varying percentages
  • Overtime hours were reduced by 27% from fiscal year 08-09 to fiscal year 10-11.
  • Overtime wages were 0.9% of base wages.
  • Annual leave (vacation) is subject to a maximum accrual of 280 hours. Employees eligible for the VSP were paid 100% of unused disability leave; otherwise employees were paid 75% for 15 or more years of service.
  • Service Recognition is payable after seven (7) years of service at a rate of $200 per year. It is known as longevity in other entities. LVVWD service recognition differs from the longevity formula used by other public entities as the amount is the same ($200/yr) regardless of salary.
  • For a second year there was no COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment)
  • Employees pay federally required Social Security contributions up to a maximum of $6,622.
