Today's Wednesday's Child has two major challenges, but by far the biggest one is his not having a permanent home. We're here today to fix that... By comparison , his other challenge is manageable.
We're at the Red Rock Climbing Center, and 13-yr-old Cash is not intimidated. In fact, he eager to put on his harness, and get going on the climbing wall.
As our host gives Cash instructions, though...this is what cash hears:
That's right...Cash is deaf. But it hardly slows him down.
Cash is deaf, and he participates...he watches TV...he recognized you the minute you walked in... Um, he doesn't let it get in his way," says Tracey, his Case Worker.
We marveled at how Cash quickly adapted to the climb. He's a natural athlete.
"He loves to play basketball. He loves outdoors, he loves to camp, he loves to fish..anything outside," says Tracey.
Cash and I communicated by writing on a pad, but he knows sign-language, and Family Services is hoping someone will come forward who knows American Sign Language.
"Learning that (sign language) would definitely be a bonus...he his, he can lip read, he does a lot of communicating through his writing," adds Tracey.
Cash goes to a special school that helps him deal with his deficit. He's can handle that, but he can't conjure up parents on his own...
"He wants a mom...that he wants a dad...he wants somebody who can help him achieve his fullest potential. He's a great kid, he's a great kid, he loves to laugh, loves to be around other kids, loves to be a part of, a part of everything that's going on," says Tracey.
Cash is ready for adoption. To get started in the process, call the Las Vegas chapter of the Adoption Exchange at 436-6335.
