"Cool" 11-yr-old Ready for Loving Family

Posted: Updated:

(Nov. 5) -- We'd like to take you back a couple of weeks to a time when it was actually warm enough to enjoy the outdoors stuff at Scandia for this Wednesday's Child profile.  This is the last of the three boys we spent the afternoon with there, doing just about everything the place has to offer...and 11-year old Nathaniel made it fun...but he also made it clear he prefers to be called "Nate".

Nate is a handsome African-American kid. You might remember the other boy - Devin -- from a previous Wednesday's Child segment. This is the first time we'd all met, and Nate made it seem like no big deal. He's easygoing and quiet, but he sees everything, and learns quickly.

But when I asked Natea what he thinks are his best qualities...this is what he said.:  "a cool....I'm good at a lot of stuff, and I'm cool....are you recording this?...said Nate, snickering.

In reality, Nate is good at a lot of stuff. He loves basketball, watching TV, he's excels at math in school, but the surprising thing is how good he is with younger kids.

"Yeah he likes doing that, and he's been playing outdoors with the little kids. I have grand-kids, and that seems to be where he gravitates more, " says his foster mother, Melanie.

Nate has been in at least 5 foster homes, and understandably carries some baggage from the emotional turmoil that comes with that. But all things considered, he's pretty well adjusted, responds well to structure and consistency, and showing lots of potential.

"Yeah, he's well-mannered, takes care of himself, takes care of his belongings, and he's a good kid, he's going to make sombebody a happy child," says his foster mother.

If you think you might qualify to be Nate's new adoptive family, call the Adoption Exchange here in Las Vegas at 436-6335. Or you can find out more on the adoption exchange website .
